The very best in Richmond orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects irregularities of the teeth and jaws. Treatment involves using a variety of appliances to move teeth to a better position by applying gentle forces.

As well as enhancing the appearance of teeth, there are a number of other benefits to receiving orthodontic treatment. For those with crooked teeth, straightening your teeth can improve eating and speaking ability, as well as encourage better oral hygiene as teeth become easier to clean in their straighter position.

Braces can be used to successfully treat a range of issues from crooked, crowded, overly spaced and twisted teeth to more serious malocclusions (upper and lower teeth not biting together properly) and misalignments.

Fixed braces

Fixed Braces consist of metal brackets that are attached to the front surface of the teeth and thin metal wires held in place with elastics. Brackets for fixed braces are now generally smaller than they once were, and they can also be customised with coloured elastics. More discreet fixed braces are also available featuring ceramic brackets and tooth-coloured wires.

These are the most commonly used braces and are suitable for a wide range of conditions. Fixed braces produce good results because they can move teeth very precisely.

Treatment steps

• If your teeth are overcrowded, it may be necessary to remove one or more teeth prior to your brace fitting. If there is insufficient space between teeth, bands can be inserted to create sufficient gaps.
• After your teeth have been cleaned and dried, brackets will be fixed in place with a strong dental adhesive. The wires are then attached to these brackets.
• The wire is shaped to encourage the teeth to move and, as it slowly returns to its original shape, it pulls the teeth with it. Initially, it moves the crown of the tooth and then goes on to move the root.
• Adjustments will be needed every 4-6 weeks.

Some people can experience a little discomfort during orthodontic treatment, particularly in the first few days after fitting or following a tightening appointment. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can ease any soreness and may help to stick to a soft diet during this time. Our orthodontist Richmond will try to reduce discomfort as much as possible and prepare you with advice on how best to take care of your new braces.

Treatment times vary for teeth straightening treatments depending on the patient, but it normally takes 12-24 months for fixed braces to realign teeth. Following treatment, you will need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position.

Richmond Orthodontist FAQs

Creating a smile that you can be proud to show off for the rest of your life can take time. Often, the types of orthodontic treatments you opt for and the levels of correction required will determine how long you need to see us for your orthodontic treatment in Richmond. As a general rule of thumb, fixed braces are usually in situ for anywhere between 12 and 24 months – however this can vary from one individual to the next. For a clearer idea, we encourage you to get in touch with our team on 020 8940 3444 to book a free new patient consultation.
Arguably one of the most important things to ensure your smile is perfect after braces is to keep up with oral hygiene. As such, our orthodontists Richmond recommends that brushing your teeth three times a day and flossing with a threader is an important way you can look after your smile during this treatment. It is also important to ensure you never miss a routine check-up with your dentist who will be able to identify any issues and rectify them before they cause unnecessary damage.
As one of the most trusted orthodontists in Richmond, we have supported children, teenagers and adults to correct their smiles through our innovative orthodontic treatments. In fact, orthodontics is more popular with adults now than ever before and there is a range of options available – including our popular Invisalign and Inman Aligner, which offer a very discreet “barely there” look and feel for those who wouldn’t want to have traditional braces. If you’re not satisfied with your smile and feel that a Richmond orthodontist can help, feel free to give us a call on 020 8940 3444 or email at [email protected] and one of our experienced team will get back to you as soon as possible.
Whether you’re struggling with an overcrowded mouth or crooked teeth – our range of orthodontic treatments in Richmond can help to correct your smile and give you the confidence you deserve. The benefits of both traditional braces and more modern alternatives, such as Invisalign, include so much more than just a straighter smile. Our orthodontic treatments can improve your ability to speak and eat, and also make oral hygiene much easier as all the teeth are more accessible. But how long can you expect these benefits to last? The truth is that once your orthodontists in Richmond have done their job, the rest is largely up to you. This means following your given aftercare instructions and wearing a retainer following treatment to help your teeth to keep their new shape and position.
