What happens during a dental hygiene appointment?

As part of a thorough hygiene appointment, your dentist will complete the following:

Examination

Our dental hygienist in Richmond will conduct a full assessment of your teeth and gum health. This involves looking for any plaque or calculus build-up and inflammation of the gums.

Scale and polish

To remove any unwanted build-up, we will scale and polish your teeth.

Using air polishing with a mixture of water and sodium bicarbonate, we can polish the surface of the teeth.

Advice

Here at The Whitehouse Dental Clinic, we focus on prevention, which is why we give all patients advice on how to maintain their smile.

Why our Appointments are 45mins or 1 hour

Speak to any hygienist and they will tell you it is impossible to carry out a thorough hygiene appointment in less than 45 mins? So why are there so many practices offering 20 mins or 30 mins appointments? The answer to this, you may need to figure out yourself!

At every visit, we will check for oral cancer, disclose your teeth and give you a plaque score (so you know how well you are really cleaning!).  The hygienists will then spend time showing you how to clean the bits you are missing, and then thoroughly clean and polish your teeth. That takes us AS A MINIMUM 45 minutes to do properly. If there are diseased sites that need extra therapy, it will take one of the team ONE HOUR!

Here at the White House, our hygiene team are only interested in doing the job as thoroughly and as well as we can. We have three hygienists, all booked up for at least 2 months as a testimony to the fact that our clients are looking for the best, rather than the quickest and cheapest.

Benefits of dental hygiene services

Treat bad breath

While bad breath is common, if it’s severe, it can be a sign of problems in the teeth and gums.

Even if you have a good at-home oral hygiene routine, seeing one of our dental hygienists in Richmond means your condition can be investigated, diagnosed and treated appropriately.

Reduce plaque build-up

Plaque sitting on the surface of the teeth can not just look unsightly but if left untreated, will eat away at the enamel causing decay and cavities.

If this plaque turns into tartar, the bacteria can cause bad breath and discolouration on the teeth.

Reduce the risk of developing gum disease

Gum disease is common in those who don’t look after their teeth at home or visit their dentist regularly enough.

If left untreated, gum disease can make it painful to eat and in some cases, cause tooth loss.

Dental hygiene services help keep the teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

Boost in confidence

Having a fresh, bright smile is something most of us strive for.

Visiting a dental hygienist in Richmond helps to maintain your oral health, helping you to feel comfortable in your smile.

When you should visit a dental hygienist

It’s recommended that you visit your dental hygienist in Richmond every 6 months.

However, if you have gum disease, suffer from bad breath, or smoke, we advise you to come in more frequently to prevent further issues from arising.

And if you are at risk of oral diseases or infection, seeing our team regularly allows us to spot any problems and treat them accordingly as soon as we can, to reduce the likelihood of them developing into something more serious.

The importance of dental hygiene appointments

1. Prevent gum disease

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. If diagnosed in the early stages gum disease (gingivitis) can be treated and reversed by expert hygienist care

2. Detect Oral Cancer

When your Dental Hygienist in Richmond,  cleans your teeth they are also screening you for oral cancer, which is highly curable if diagnosed early stages.

3. Help maintain good physical health

Recent studies have linked heart attacks and strokes to gum disease, resulting from poor oral hygiene. Professional dental cleaning every 6 months (or 3 months for people who smoke) significantly helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy and reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.

A clinical study*of 100,000 people showed that those who regularly had professional teeth cleaning (scale & polish) had a 24% lower risk of heart disease and 13% lower risk of a stroke

4. Detect dental problems early

Your hygienist will be able to detect any early signs of problems with your teeth or gums.

5. Prevent bad breath

Dental studies show that about 85% of people with persistent bad breath (known as halitosis) have a dental problem to blame for it. Tarter that causes bad breath.

6. Brighten up your smile

Your dental hygienist can remove most deep staining caused by items such as tobacco, coffee, tea and red wine. During your professional cleaning, your hygienist will also polish your teeth to a cosmetic shine, the result being a whiter and brighter smile which can be enhanced even further with teeth whitening in Richmond.

7. Advice on maintaining good oral health

Your dental hygienist will help to ensure you are maintaining good oral health by visual examination and comparing records from your previous visits. If you are falling off track with your oral hygiene they will help put you back on the right path, including advice on your home dental care and suitable product
